3. Complete multiple practice essays--and ask someone to grade them for you
One of the best ways to ready for the SAT Essay is to take timed practice essays. As much as possible, mimic the actual testing environment. Choose a quiet place to work, and do not consult outside materials. It can also be helpful to ask someone who is familiar with SAT Essay grading to review your practice essays (for instance, your high school English teacher).
Gere and Perelman aren’t the only ones who know about the demands placed upon SAT essay graders. Many students do, too. Those with a firm grasp of what time-pressured essay-readers care about—and, to be sure, what things they don’t care about—can increase their chances at a high score by resorting to all sorts of approaches that are, shall we say, less than ideal. For starters, facts don’t just take a back seat when it comes to describing personal experiences on the SAT essay; they don’t matter in general.

Your essay will be hand-graded by a member of the Kaplan Essay Grading team. Our professional team grades hundreds of essays and has received training in the same rubrics that the official ACT and SAT essay graders use.We should also note that the new SAT essay is graded on a smaller scale. Whereas the old SAT essay graders evaluated the essay on a scale of 1–6, new graders must select scores from 1–4. Old graders were expected to assign scores within one point of one another, so they were very reluctant to assign extremely high or low scores. With the change in scale, however, graders will likely be more willing to assign “very high” scores (i.e. 4) or “very low” scores (i.e. 1) because these scores are not as far from the middle as they used to be.
